Initial reactions

Guthrie Mayor Adam Ropp posted a statement calling Kirk's death "beyond heartbreaking" and urging residents to "disagree without violence." Reaction elsewhere in the community was more mixed: local activist Stef Fortney described her initial reaction as a feeling of "relieved justice," while a Facebook post by Guthrie business owner Lisa Sorrell, made before Kirk's death was confirmed, drew a range of responses from commenters, some of which Sorrell liked, expressing satisfaction at the shooting.

Memorial gathering

The following week, roughly 350 people attended a memorial service for Kirk outside Guthrie's historic Fairmont Creamery, organized by the Guthrie-based Ekklesia organization. Mayor Ropp spoke at the event, as did newly elected State Senator Randy Grellner and Edmond pastor Dan Fisher, who encouraged attendees to honor Kirk by living purposefully. A Turning Point USA official told the crowd the organization had received thousands of applications to start new chapters since Kirk's death.
