The Oklahoma State Capital's Privacy Policy

Last Amendment Date: 9/19/2026

At The Oklahoma State Capital — published and operated by Oklahoma State Capital Media, LLC, which is responsible for the personal information described in this policy — we are deeply committed to maintaining the privacy of our readers. This privacy policy outlines how we collect, use, and protect the information you provide when you use https://www.oklahomastatecapital.com.

Unlike many other websites, we do not use Google Analytics or knowingly use any third-party tracking services that assign cookies or track your browsing behavior. We use our own first-party analytics, which runs entirely on our own servers and never shares your visit data with Google or any other third party.

We DO NOT accept advertising from any third party service to include the intrusive Google Adsense that monitizes many web services.

By using our website, you agree to the terms of this privacy policy. If you do not agree, please refrain from using our site.

1. Information We Collect

A. Personal Information
We may collect personal information from you in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

  • When you subscribe to emails
  • Register on our site
  • Respond to a survey
  • Fill out a form
  • Leave comments on our articles
  • Interact with other features or services available on our website

The personal information we collect may include your name, email address, mailing address, and phone number.

B. Non-Personal Information
We may collect non-personal information about you whenever you interact with our website. This can include:

  • Browser type
  • Computer or device type
  • Operating system
  • Internet service provider (ISP)
  • IP address
  • Date and time of access
  • Referring and exit pages
  • Clickstream data
  • Technical characteristics your browser or device reports about itself, including screen and window dimensions and regional settings
  • Display and accessibility preferences, such as dark mode, reduced motion or increased contrast

C. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use cookies to enhance your experience on our website, including for site functionality such as user authentication, remembering your preferences, and enabling basic site features. Our first-party analytics also sets a cookie to distinguish visits and measure our readership; this cookie stays on our own servers and is never shared with Google or any other third party. We do not use Google Analytics, nor do we knowingly permit any third-party integration that enables tracking cookies or assigns third-party tracking identifiers. Our analytics currently record the visitor's full IP address (not anonymized) alongside standard visit data such as pages viewed, referring pages, and browser/device type. This data is never sold or shared with advertisers.

D. Why We Collect It
We use the information above for two purposes.

The first is to understand our readership and to build the site for the devices people actually use. Knowing that a good share of our readers are on hardware several years old changes what we are willing to send them.

The second is to protect the security and integrity of this site, and in particular the parts of it that anyone can contribute to — the wiki, reader comments, and our voter panel. Those are worth manipulating, and we cover state politics, so we should assume somebody will try. Technical information about the devices and connections reaching us is part of how we detect and prevent that abuse. We do not publish the methods we use, for the plain reason that doing so would tell the people we are guarding against exactly what to work around.

What we do with that information is bounded, and those limits are commitments, not description. We do not sell it. We do not hand it to advertisers or use it to target advertising. We do not use it to assemble a picture of your interests or your politics, and we do not share it with anyone outside this newsroom except where section 4 says we must.

We keep records for as long as they are needed for the purposes set out above, and no longer. If you would like to know what we hold about you, or would like it removed, write to us and we will tell you honestly what there is.

You can disable cookies through your browser settings, but doing so may affect how our site functions.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect in the following ways:

  • To Improve Our Website: We use your feedback and usage data to enhance the layout, content, and overall experience of the site.
  • To Personalize User Experience: We may use your information to deliver personalized content based on your interests or location.
  • To Communicate with You: If you have opted into our newsletter or filled out a contact form or enabled push notifications, we may use your email address or device to send updates or respond to inquiries.
  • To Improve Customer Service: Information you provide helps us better respond to your requests and support needs.

3. Our Commitment to a Higher Standard

The Oklahoma State Capital is dedicated to exceeding standard privacy practices. Unlike most websites:

  • We do not use Google Analytics, ensuring that your data is not tracked or stored by third parties for advertising purposes.
  • We do not knowingly allow any third-party integration that collects or shares your data for tracking, profiling, or advertising purposes. This means that no third-party cookies are used to track your behavior across the web. We do not want outside services to track your news consumption preferences through our site.
  • We use self-hosted, first-party analytics that runs entirely on our own servers — your visit data stays with us and is never sent to Google or any other third party.

Those commitments are about outsiders, and we do not want them read as more than they are. We do analyse technical information ourselves, on our own servers, for the reasons set out in section 1(D) above. A higher standard means saying so in the same breath, not burying it further down the page.

Our commitment to privacy is a fundamental part of our mission to serve you with integrity and transparency.

4. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to others.

We may share your personal information in the following circumstances:

  • Service Providers: We may share your data with third-party service providers that assist us with our business operations. As of the time of this amendment, this is limited to integration with payment providers for the purpose subscription payments.
  • Legal Obligations: We may disclose your information to comply with legal obligations or government requests but do not willingly provide information sans proper legal process.

5. Links to Third-Party Websites and Services

Our website may contain links to third-party websites, services, and advertisements that are not controlled by us. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of these external sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you interact with.

However, we actively avoid third-party integrations that track user behavior or collect personal data through our website without consent.

Files your browser loads from someone else. A few parts of this site ask your browser to fetch a file from another company’s server. When that happens, that company can see your IP address and which file was asked for, the same as if you had visited their site yourself. None of them set a cookie when they serve us these files, none of them are advertising or analytics companies, and we are paid nothing by any of them. This is the complete list, and we will keep it complete:

  • Planespotters.net — photographs of aircraft, on our flight pages. Their rules require the photograph to be loaded from them and credited to the photographer who took it; we are not permitted to copy it onto our own server.
  • cdnjs, run by Cloudflare — the document viewer used by our People’s Audit reports.
  • The host of a live broadcast — the video player on our live page, which is loaded only after you choose to start the video, and not at all once a broadcast has ended. The player itself may set cookies once you start it; that is the company hosting the broadcast, not us.

The list is this short on purpose. Everything else this site needs — the programming libraries, the icons, the editor our writers type into — we keep on our own servers, so asking for a page here does not announce you to anyone else. What is left is what we cannot host: the photographers' own terms require their pictures to come from them, and a live video player has to come from whoever is carrying the broadcast. We do not add anything to this list for advertising, analytics, social media buttons, or any other purpose that watches you.
