Trump: Aid to California, But Voter ID First

Trump appears to suggest that federal aid to Los Angeles could be contingent on California adopting voter id.

President Trump has declared that federal assistance for Los Angeles wildfire recovery could be contingent on two key actions: implementing voter ID laws and addressing the state’s water distribution issues. As he prepares to visit California later today, speaking in North Carolina during a tour of hurricane recovery efforts, Trump seemed to suggest these measures were necessary before he could provide support for a federal aid package. “I want to see two things in Los Angeles. Voter ID, so that the people have a chance to vote, and I want to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout the state. Those are the two things. After that, I will be the greatest president that California has ever seen.”

Posting on X California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office pushed back, "Conditioning aid for American citizens is wrong."

Trump is expected to appear in southern California later today.
